What, is that it? We get 10 pages of Zeen thinking how great it will be to be chosen then the smugness wiped out when his name is not called, and his father talking of his relief at the ouitcome. Then tow pages of test questions followed by the first few chapters from The Testing book one. Waste of time. It adds nothing we didn't already know.

Cia Vale studies hard so she can finish at the top of her class and hopefully move onto "The Testing" and attend university. It was what her father did and she hopes to follow in his footsteps and try to help their post-war civilization recover. However, her brother before her, Zeen, did the same and he wasn't selected for The Testing. Cia hopes and is surprised that she is one of the chosen few that will undertake The Testing. Will it be what she hopes for, or will it be as dangerous as her father says.

Before starting the audiobook, The Testing, I decided to dig into the novella, The Testing Guide, which is a prequel to this new series by Joelle Charbonneau. I've read several dystopia series and quite enjoy them, so I was hoping I'd like this one too. If The Testing Guide is anything to go by I'm pretty sure I'm going to love The Testing.

The series is set in a post-war civilization that is trying to repair itself and it sends certain students to university to study and develop new skills to make their country better. I like this concept as it is fairly new-to-me, and different from the other series.

I like Zeen, who we see early on and from his point of view. He's disappointed that he didn't get selected. We then move to Cia's point of view and she has the same high hopes.

The Testing Guide gave me just enough preview of this series that I'm really eager to start The Testing and then pick up the latest release, Independent Study.

This is a short story - very short - that comes prior to the Testing trilogy. It describes Cia's brother Zeen on his Testing Day. You get a brief glimpse into the father's character and also see, perhaps, how Cia gets her start on the journey ahead.

Wow that was really short
and gave very little insight into the full story that is the book
I hope it's enough to pull readers in though. It's really great series so far.

I've already read book 1, so this was just interesting information for me

But if you're trying to decide if you want to read the book, the story is SO much more than this previous gives you.

Give it a chance.

Quick glimpse into Zeen's life. I wouldn't pay $ for it as short as it is, but it is curious. (I obviously am not used to 0.5, 1.5, etc books).

I did not expect this to be super short. I think 90% of this was the first few chapters of The Testing itself.

Set in Zeen's POV, it shows a glimpse of the aftermath of his graduation. It's a nice little fluff piece for the first novel. Nothing remarkable.
