This was definitely one of the prettiest ones however I didn’t really care for the ending.

I still think the tone is a bit all over the place. With all we and the characters know is happening in the background it seems a bit strange to introduce a romantic/festival subplot. I understand that there is a level to which certain characters are trying to mask their anxiety, but it seems like the narrative should generally focus more on trying to figure out how to help Coco's mom and the other apprentice. I did really like the way disability was addressed in the text and the way that further destabilized Coco's faith in the principles, as well as our own, but I can't help but feel their lack of focus on helping reverse the forbidden spells is unrealistic, even if it leads to interesting store beats. I also love Ininia's design!

This manga series has amazing disability representation, and disability justice is a huge theme of the plot! These characters have my heart, and the worldbuilding is phenomenal. Readers who enjoy high fantasy and stories about witches will quickly be drawn into this world. The rules and mechanics of magic are incredibly sophisticated and beautifully laid out in the first few volumes. At this point in the series, the ethics of magic and laws regulating magic are increasingly questioned as our characters encounter new problems in the action of the story. The layers and complexity of Witch Hat Atelier encourage higher-order thinking and provide rich grounds for discussions around duty/ethics and law, magic/technology, and disability justice with tweens and teens.
