Overall, a super ambitious that executes marvelously. Every character is complex but Ozeki does a good job showing how each character is completely rational from their own point of view, while irrational from the point of others. 

At the end of the day, it’s a very realistic portrayal of how real people would act, which I appreciated. Anabelle is expertly constructed. Benny actually acts like a 14 year old. It also respectfully approaches homelessness and mental illness, which was nice. 

Minor points deducted because the ending was a little bit too happy and neat, and it feels like the heaviness that had led up to it was all for nothing (not that I didn’t love the book overall). I really thought it was leading up to Benny ending up in prison or permanently in the psych ward, and I didn’t love the “and now, everything is better!” aspect. 

I really liked the monologue by the psychiatrist about “why is it so hard to believe what he says is the truth”/the whole “what is the truth” motif used throughout the novel. 

I know this book received some minor criticism for romanticizing mental illness, but I think I can’t deduct points for how it was written.

I loved this book. It’s an amazing and thoughtful exploration of grief and mental health, and also somehow a love letter to libraries. Her treatment of psychiatry was fascinating and infuriating, and I couldn’t help but feel that somewhere along the line, Ozeki had a negative experience with this field. I was rooting for all the characters in this book and wanted them to have a happy ending.

The ending felt a little rushed to me and a little convenient, but I think the characters needed a happy ending. Leaving it ambiguous or completely devastating would have been a disservice.

Weaving an omnicient Book narrator with a youthful young man who hears voices of objects and unseen entities (including the Book) as him and his mom grieves the loss of his father and finds his way through early adolescence. Some of the characters felt a bit flat/different from a teen boy narrator, but otherwise a solid read. The self proclaimed ‘big question’ is “what is real?” But themes of family, friendship, mental health, anti-capitalism, suffering, zen, substance use/abuse, and family/care.

This is one of my favorite books I have ever read. The twists and turns had me enthralled. Such a beautiful and real depiction of mental illness

The ending was lovely, but this book felt 200 pages too long and I really started to hate picking it up. Personally a lot of it could’ve been cut and made everything a lot more powerful and engaging, because at times it felt tedious.

I have a soft spot for books that contain characters with mental illness, and Ozeki worked magic with Benny's character. Very few authors are able to portray the harrowing details of living with mental illness, and she absolutely hit the mark. 
Benny and his mother's story is one of grief, struggle within society, expectations one puts on oneself and society's expectations; as well as all the things including growing up, community and belonging. 
I loved this book so much and I really didn't expect to. It had been sitting on my tbr shelf for so long because I feared it's size but it was worth it. It's definitely not going to be for everyone, but between the crows, jazz music, B-Man and all the other intricate details of this book; this was my book to a T.
I will absolutely be picking up more by Ozeki.
