I loved this book. It’s an amazing and thoughtful exploration of grief and mental health, and also somehow a love letter to libraries. Her treatment of psychiatry was fascinating and infuriating, and I couldn’t help but feel that somewhere along the line, Ozeki had a negative experience with this field. I was rooting for all the characters in this book and wanted them to have a happy ending.

The ending felt a little rushed to me and a little convenient, but I think the characters needed a happy ending. Leaving it ambiguous or completely devastating would have been a disservice.

Very charming and very odd book. It covers so many important topics without really being about one topic.

The prose of this book is definitely the highlight. Ozeki does so much interesting voicing and writing. The way she articulates the thoughts of different characters is masterful. The articulation of grief is downright hard to read at times, usually in a good way. Handling of difficult subject matter was not always my favorite, but not awful. I felt like the end was a bit abrupt.

Just WOW. I haven’t read a book with such a strong message in ages. Really makes you think about how our environment and the way we are brought up shapes us as humans. The way our parents’ toxic patterns affect us… It’s just gorgeous. I have to say, it might be one of my favourite books of all time now. A bit slow paced at the beginning but once you’re past the first couple of chapters, it sucks you in.
