One obstacle after another. It was like a car crash, I couldn't look away.

Fail. Not a fan. Just don't like this author. The story jumps around without any real flow and the characters lack depth and that special likability that draws you to them.

To be perfectly honest, I read only half of it and the half I did read was forgettable.

This book was provided to me by the publisher, free of charge.

I really loved Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus's book "The Nanny Diaries". I've looked forward to reading something else from them since reading their first book, and I was surprised and excited when I realized that they were the authors of Between You and Me- although I had already decided to read the book just based on the description alone!

McLaughlin and Kraus didn't disappoint with Between You and Me. There were loveable characters and characters that brought about strong feelings of disgust and dislike. The main character was a huge celebrity, but the book was spicier and more quickly paced than any celebrity tabloid or Perez Hilton's blog. I loved the ending of the book because it was left open and I can only hope that McLaughlin and Kraus write a sequel! At the very least I hope they don't go as long before writing another book together- Between You and Me was a great read and made me hungry for more from these authors!

The whole time I was reading this book I couldn't help compare it to the train wreck that is Brittany Spears. Kelsey's story is very similar, but the difference is I found that I actually felt sympathy for Kelsey and was routing for her. Maybe that's biased since with Kelsey you get the back story, you get to see her selfish, overbearing parents pushing her beyond limits that anyone is capable of. She is a prisoner of her own success, no wonder she finally melted down. With Brittany we only see the public side.

Logan on the other hand I had mixed feelings for. At the beginning of the book she was this strong independent woman, college educated, self sufficient and then she gets sucked into the superficial world of Kelsey Wade. She loses herself to her famous cousin who she hasn't seen in decades. The transition from modern woman to Kelsey's servant takes place in the blink of an eye. I understand the lure of fame and helping her once best friend and cousin but she barely even gave it a thought. It was especially difficult to believe given the tension between Logan and Kelsey's father. Something happened between them but we aren't sure exactly what it was only that it left Logan in a coma and her parents and Kelsey's parents don't speak anymore. Would you be so forgiving that you would go to work closely with someone who you know may have killed you? I just wish there was more tension between the father and Logan, it would have made it more realistic.

You can almost see this as a cautionary tale, be careful what you wish for because it may not be all that it seems. Just because you have money and fame doesn't make your life easier, in fact it can make it downright unbearable, with everyone telling you what to do, how to behave, what to wear etc.

So who is the strong one in this story? Is it Kelsey the star who cracks and spirals downward or is it Logan the devoted cousin? My vote is for Kelsey. But whoever you route for you are in for a ride, so take a sneak peak inside fame and fortune and the not always so glamorous world of the rich and famous.

It was kind of a strange book. Kelsey was obviously modeled after Britney Spears. Logan (horrible name btw) the push-over cousin who becomes an assistant. Kelsey's parents are horrible and manipulative- imagine Jessica Simpson's dad, and Lindsay Lohan's mother.

This book made me uncomfortable, enough so that I almost didn't finish reading it. The entire time I felt like I was reading a really long tabloid story into a celebrity's life, especially when it seems to be Britney Spear's story disguised as fiction. The only character I remotely liked was Kelsey, the starlet who's like was falling apart. It's possible I would have enjoyed this book more if I didn't feel like Kelsey's entire life was ripped straight out of Britney's meltdown but it felt all too familiar.

***I received this book from Goodreads First Reads***

Take a Britney type star (uber famous since childhood and barely holding on by 25), add secretive and dysfunctional parents, a slew of staff, paparazzi, and then tell the story of her cousin who used to be like her sister but hasn't seen her for years and gets pulled back into her life and you've got the story. Written well with a good pace and some whip-smart funny dialogue, the money is never a problem and everyone had a blind spot that leads them to make some poor choices. Perfect for the summer

I just finished Between You and Me and I have to tell you guys I have mixed feelings regarding the book. There were parts that I liked, there were moments I was soo frustrated I didn’t want to finish it.

When your wrapped with wealth, power and popularity – what does one do to keep up with its pace and what are the things one is willing to sacrifice to maintain and keep it? Between You and Me gives us that look-see of what it has to take to be a celebrity and what it means to be always in the limelight. This novel is inspired by the life of Britney Spears (NOTE: I have never liked the singer but was intantly curious).

Okay so onto the story, here’s what I like:

It was written well. When it came to pacing, progression and story line I don’t have anything bad to say. I have never read a single novel from both authors and it was amazing at how fast I finished reading this book. From the moment you read the first few pages, beware! It is a very quick read and you are given information back and forth so be sure that you buckle your seat belts.
It is a story about THE pop star, who doesn’t want a glimpse of it? Everyone Most of us loves to gossip – that’s a fact. Granted that it is only “inspired” but reading the story gives you a different take on the whole Britney Spears’ hullabaloo.
Okay so what don’t I like about the book:

It was very tiring to keep up. It was very emotionally draining to read about Logan-Kelsey-their family-everything else. Logan was an awesome character, very strong and dedicated but at the end of the day one should have the idea on when to say no and when to stop with all the drama and craziness. I was loving and hating her at the same time. Lastly Kelsey’s parents. Read the book you’ll understand why.
It takes a lot to be successful but it’s a different idea if you are successful and in show business when everyone is keeeping an eye on what you do and judges you on the results of your actions. Between You and Me gives us a different view behind a persons situations – it doesn’t just pertain to popular and important person – but it concerns everyone of us.

Before you give judgement to a person and what happened to them, be sure that you know most of the facts or at least you have an idea on what’s happening leading to a particular scenario scenario. Better yet, keep your opinion to yourself.

I may be part of the minority who didn’t enjoy the story but give it a try, you might like it. As I said, I am part of a portion, there are reading who are loving it. In my opinion, was just too tiring to read – as I have said above, it contained to much drama for my emotional compass to digest but asides that it is interesting.

Never, ever, ever in my life have I felt more empathy for someone like Brittany Spears or Jessica Simpson than after reading this book. Between You and Me is a searing look at the lives behind those that are uber-famous, uber-rich and uber-young. Never did I imagine the toll, physical and emotional that those girls (and Biebs!) are put under. They are worked like dogs by those around them who depend on their success for their salaries. How hard would it be when parents become managers? When cousins and friends become assistants? When your parenting fails are front page news? Who would you trust when everyone is just waiting for you to slip up? These questions and more make for an intriguing read. This book was by the authors of the Nanny Diaries, which is one of the best chick-lit books ever written, in my opinion. This one was an equally scandalous look at the lives of the rich and very famous. I highly recommend it, if only that it will give you a guilty heart when you glance at the tabloids while waiting to check out at the supermarket.
