Enjoyed the writing and characters in this - as I have with Goenawan's other books - but the plot didn't quite work for me. The main character and Liyun loving each other didn't feel real. And the ending itself is not satisfying at all. Obviously endings that leave you with questions can work, but in this case it feels like the key mystery of the book has extra layers added to it right at the end which are never answered. Shame as I really enjoyed it otherwise!

“I promise you, one day we’ll able to think about the past without all the anger and resentment, and all the tears in our chests.”
I was very excited when I bought my copy of Watersong. I had no clue what the story was about before I purchased it, but I was intrigued when I saw the summary. And I ended up reading it in a span of a day. I love the complexity of Shouji. The difficulty of trying to move on from someone you love, as well as the past that comes back to haunt you was very well written. There were characters that I hated when I first read them (ahem, Liyun) but as I continued reading, I ended up loving her character.
A very lovely book ❤️ would highly recommend.

I just thought this was so lovely. I enjoyed the vignettes and the sort of tangential plots. The relationships and conversations just felt real. Maybe not for everyone, but definitely worth a read!

Starts as an interesting mystery which soon turns into a domestic meditation on letting go, love and loss for majority of the story; and then again ends as an abrupt mystery.
It had it's quiet, nice moments but...
I need some answers y'all! For that, read this one.
