A return to YA book series to get me out of my reading slump! I always enjoy a dystopian book and Divergent was no exception. It was nothing ground-breaking and there are definitely some questionable sections about sensitive topics (e.g., body image, sexual assault, suicide). But, regardless, it is definitely a page-turner packed full of action.

The Divergent series was built on such an interesting concept and was written well. Veronica Roth is a talented author and has published some of my favorite stories.

I’m a bit late to the train on this one, but I really enjoyed it. I was a massive hunger games fan back in the day, and my boyfriend convinced me to watch maze runner and then divergent, and I enjoyed divergent so much I started reading it the same night. Some of the dialogue was a bit weird at times but overall I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed Tris as a character, she’s like the ‘I’m not like other girls’ but at the same time she’s not. I loved her strength. I loved that four admitted that she wasn’t pretty, and that wasn’t the reason he likes her anyway. Gonna keep reading this series, and if the films were anything to go by the 3rd book is probably going to fry my brain but I’ll try my best anyway.

I've read this book for the first time in 2011 and now, once again, 10 years later. The first time, it was a solid 5 stars... now, with a different maturity, I'll give it 4 stars because, despite all the blood and violence, is so young, innocent and pure.

I really like this story: a society divided into factions, young people having to choose where they want to spend the rest of their lives (knowing that if they choose a different faction than the one they born in it means having no more connections with their families and friends)... it is so cruel, such a difficult decision for 16 year olds to make. Even after they choose their faction, there are still the risk of not acing the tests and become Factionless (yikes!).

I really would like to know how different factions treat, and process, their new members. Since Tris chooses the Dauntless we never knows what happens in the other factions (and my curiosity kicks in).

This book is fun and really enjoyable. The characters are interesting and relatable - even the bad ones - and I rediscover my crush on Four (but it feels kinda creepy now, that I'm 30 years old... oh well!).

At an immediate, surface level, this is an enjoyable read. The plot is just engaging enough, the characters just likeable enough. However, it contains a lot of inconsistencies and things that just don't make sense. So much time is spent on the very first stage of training, that the fear stages, which would be infinitely more interesting to read about, seem rushed, and when the climax of the book happens, the attack, it seems to have sprung out of nowhere, and therefore feels a bit forced. Speaking of forced, the relationship between between Tris and Four is at best rushed and convenient, and at worst predatory. On the other hand, without delving too deep into the problems of this book, it really isn't too bad.
