I have enjoyed reading this refreshing series. A little bit of drama, feisty heroines, strong heroes and just enough angst and of course, a happy ending. Life at the border between Scotland and England is rather dangerous and a continuous battle between sworn enemies. There are times when peace is achieved for just a few weeks. This is done through tournaments where men from both sides compete.

I couldn't wait to read Toren's story. Met him in the previous book and thought that after losing Bristol Manor to the English and his sister married to Bryce Waryn (the English Lord who reclaimed Bristol Manor) his life might get a little more complicated. It did. Toren is the chief of Clan Kerr and his king asked him to kill none other than the English Lord Warden of the Middle Marches: Stewart Hallington, because said Lord is taking bribes. Toren's sole purpose to participate in the tournament was to get close to Stewart Hallington and kill him. And then Toren meets a girl at the tournament, Juliette and the attraction is immediate. Juliette is Hallington's daughter and when Toren finds out he is, of course, conflicted between loyalty to his king and clan and his love for Juliette. Juliette on the other hand, didn't learn of Toren's assignment until much later. She is devastated.

I never felt like the plot was rushed in spite of the fact that it all happened in a few days. Somehow Ms Mecca manages to do it without me having to question the why or how. These books are fun, light and with enough drama to keep me coming back to them.

Toren's story.
We see a different side to him from book 2.
He is honourable or tries to be.
It's a sweet story.

I would like to thank the author Cecelia Mecca for a copy of this book in return for an honest opinion.

This book focuses on Torren Kerr, the chief of clan Kerr. He just wants to keep his clan and lands safe, but is ordered to kill the English warden who is suspected of taking bribes and putting border peace at risk. Lady Juliette Hallington is the daughter of the English Warden and is trying to find a love match before her farther forces her into a loveless marriage. It's well written and a nice expansion of the universe Mecca is creating, the book can be read as standalone or as part of the series.
