"Historically poets have been on the forefront of social movements. Woke is a collection of poems by women that reflects the joy and passion in the fight for social justice, tackling topics from discrimination to empathy, and acceptance to speaking out.

With Theodore Taylor's bright, emotional art, and writing from Mahogany L. Browne, Elizabeth Acevedo and Olivia Gatwood, kids will be inspired to create their own art and poems to express how they see justice and injustice."

I don't read nor understand poetry often, but every poem in this book spoke to me. It is such a wonderful book of poems for middle grade and maybe fourth and fifth graders. I had a few favorites but I truly enjoyed all of them. They made my heart weep a bit, but proud at the same time. I can't wait to read more from this author and the contributors.

The illustrations were beautiful and poetry was powerful. The poetry was very simple in form and structure but used heavy repetition and imagery. I enjoyed the pictured accompanying the poetry and a handful of the poems made me think about my role in activism and fighting against injustice. It challenged me to be more aware of my own privilege and how I can use that for good.

This is a children’s book with beautiful illustrations, messages, and poems written by some talented authors I adore. This should be a staple in elementary classrooms & was lovely.

I love the idea behind this, just not the individual poems (unfortunately).
