Darkly funny at times, confusing and anticlimactic at others. I felt that the "climax" was less interesting than the vignettes into Jared's life, though Jared's life is so depressing that you really feel bad for the kid. The magical realism elements kind of come out of nowhere and could have been better developed. I was rooting for Jared, and his strength as a character makes me want to read the sequel.

I don't normally put content warnings, but this book has a lot of very graphic content, so I'm including a bunch of content warnings.

This low-fantasy magical realism book follows Jared as he navigates the challenges of colonialism, high school, an abusive family, and hallucinations that may or may not be magic.

Although I appreciated the coming-of-age aspect of this book, I found that the fantasy storyline was more on the sideline than I would have liked. One of my biggest criticisms of the writing is that the drug use and violence/weapons reads like it was written by a mom who has never smoked weed before. No hate to the author, but some of the slang that was used was laughable.

Spice level: 🌶🌶.5/5

I read Son of a Trickster previously and felt very meh about it. I received The Return of the Trickster in a book box, so I felt I needed to reread this one prior to the rest of the series. This time, I actually tried to focus on it. Though it still wasn't a favourite, I enjoyed the intricate nature of it. It was complex and touched on many aspects of Indigenous culture, family and relationships. It was complicated and messy. It was well written and had complex characters. Overall, I enjoyed it. I do feel that it may be a love it or leave it series, though I will continue on with it.
