This first in the series outpaced my expectations. Like other readers, I was thrown by the synopsis. Unlike the others, I found it a happy surprise. This was a simply wonderful blend of real life experiences of our young people today overlaid with great indigenous traditional beliefs. I will certainly be following Jared's journey. I loved it

You're going to get a quarter of the way through this book and be like "Soooo...." And halfway through you'll be like "Stilllllll waiting....".

But it's worth it. It's all worth it. Pay attention. Stick it out. Trust the journey.

This review is awfully hippy for me, but you'll understand that too, when you're finished.

I picked this up on a whim and I’m glad I did. I read this book in one day and I’ve already ordered book 2.

The first two thirds of the book merely hint at the magical realm hiding just below the surface, instead focusing on main character Jared's personal and family challenges. Author Eden Robinson does a fantastic job of shining a light on the kinds of real-life struggles many Indigenous people deal with everyday, without ever making her characters feel helpless or without their own agency. It was an eye-opening experience to read about, which is then ratcheted up to eleven when the true reality of Jared's existence comes to the forefront.

Well-developed characters that are both interesting and relatable, whip-smart dialogue (especially from the main character), and enough strange occurrences and mini-mysteries to keep you reading chapter after chapter until the end. Can't wait to find out what happens to Jared and Co. in the next book.

Strongly recommended.
