A smart and strong willed protagonist

I liked this book. Nadia is a great character who is intelligent, caring, resourceful and determined. Unlike a lot of strong female characters these days she doesn't come off as a superhero of some sort, but just an ordinary woman.

Not interesting enough to finish.

Mystery was pretty interesting. I don't feel like I know much about Nadia after reading this book. I am intrigued enough to try another book in the series.

This was one of the Kindle First offerings for April. It took me almost two weeks to decide between the four because none of them really seemed that great to me. This was an interesting book - I enjoy a thread of history in my books, but overall I wasn't thrilled by the mystery in the book. When Nadia couldn't explain why she was looking into the death and found that she wasn't all that fond of the dead man, I had a hard time continuing to read. If the protagonist doesn't care, why should I?
It was ok - I won't be reading the series that follows though.

Not what I was expecting, but good. I thought I was getting a literary fiction/mystery type thing. But it's a thriller. Yes, there were some issues and some unbelievable bits. And yes, it's pretty easy to figure out parts of it. But for some fun reading (plus a decent bit of history), it was a good read. I look forward to reading more in the series.

Protagonist, Nadia, has roots in the Ukrainian-American community. Learning more about the history and culture of the "Ukes" was interesting, but otherwise, I didn't much like this book.

I enjoyed it enough but I am not compelled to read the series if it is one. It didn't quite capture me.

Getting to know Nadia

Overall, I enjoyed this pre-quel to the rest of the series although it did not draw me in quite like the other books from Orest.

The flashbacks of Nadia at PLAST Camp and her brother's unseen protectiveness was a good way to understand her character more. The ending was rushed.

I received this copy from NetGalley. On the whole, this book was pretty good. I enjoyed the historical aspect the most. The writing and dialogue were decent and it was intriguing enough to keep you interested. The weakest points were why she even got involved in the first place and what her being an altar girl really had to do with anything. A small complaint; referring to the Ukrainian community as "Ukes" was distracting for me, it made me thing of Ukeleles, but that might be personal goof in my own head. Anyway, I would recommend the book for a quick mystery.
