żeromski is a dead white guy BUT one who could actually write a three dimensional and entirely realistic female protagonist, and for that he shouldn't deserve commendation but given the dead-white-guy canon, he does.
nevertheless, the faithful river is actually a really enjoyable (albeit depressing and slightly gory) book, and I'm very glad that comp lit 1C has exposed me to this book - I'm interested in reading more of żeromski's work, and more polish literature generally.
