Many layers to this novel. Many fires everywhere.

this was really spectacular and one of those books that’s brings up so many questions and themes that are so important. the adult side was flawless and mia is one of the most intelligent, companionate, and truly sympathetic characters i’ve read. i wish we got more some of the kids and that’s why i am not giving this 5 stars. pearl and izzys backs are HURTING from caring the entirety of the teens in this book.

giving this 5 stars because i constantly think about it

“There was only one thing to do, then. She curled up on the bed, feeling small and pink and tender as a cocktail shrimp, and let her fantasy go, like a balloon souring into the sky until it burst.”

What struck me most about this book was the care and nuance the author gave to each character’s perspective, regardless of age, gender, or perceived privilege. The whole book really lived in the grey areas of exploration of each character’s unique experience and motivations and I found that really engaging and refreshing. Also the descriptions of motherhood and love and attachment to a child were really beautiful and moving.

I never got super into this book. I really liked a couple of the stories but overall was not super invested in the characters or many of the story lines. I felt very meh towards the book once I was finished.

Looking at it 2 starts seems a little rough - this is probably the definition of a 2.5 star book for me. I read it for a book club and found myself saying more things that I didn't like during discussion so I went with the 2 star rating.

4 and a half stars. Just barely misses 5 stars by some clumsy bits in the middle. Otherwise, the story and the images and the characters were lovely. The title emerged enough to imprint on me that it wasn’t coincidence with more intensive “little fires” as the conclusion loomed. I really want to see those photographs by Mia, too.

Hmmmm. My takeaway- Lots of rich white lady privilege and annoying teens. Probably in the minority but don’t see the big draw of this book.... and the ending left too many loose ends for me. I might have to watch the Hulu adaptation to see if they have improved or expanded.

Update after watching the series— I think the dramatization improved on the story.

I liked it, was an easy read und vor allem die Frage der Adoption war spannend und hat ein interessantes Thema aufgemacht über das man diskutieren und nachdenken kann.

Celeste Ng, again, shows us her deep understanding of families, relationships, and emotions. With its examination of all of these things, interwoven with Ng's insightful commentary on privilege, Little Fires Everywhere wrecked me and made me whole all at once. How very like life.

I am 1/4 into this book, and it is pointless fluff. I chose this one because it's a favorite, award winning bestseller - but it's pointless. I care nothing for the characters at this point, the writing style is missing, and the details are repetitive. What's the point of this book?

Finally slogged through to the end and I've never been happier to be done with a book! 1* for "I did not like this book" - I don't usually feel that strongly and will go for 2 *'s when I just don't like a book. I am obviously not the intended audience for this.
