Some of the stories in this anthology were incredible and very accessible for someone with little knowledge of eastern culture and stories. However, there were many that I found incredibly hard to read because I did not know the mythology or phrases and when I tried to look them up, couldn’t find the meaning. I did learn a lot about eastern culture and greatly enjoyed the collection, however some of the stories were not my favorite.

I really enjoyed this collection! I found myself wishing I knew some young adults I could give it to, but at least one of the stories is mildly spicy so I wouldn’t personally want to give it to anyone younger than high school age. There are a great variety of stories, from modern retelling, to pure historical fantasy, to speculative fiction. I particularly loved the stories that centered on familial relationships, but there are some sweet and powerful romances in there as well. It was great to learn about some great new-to-me writers that I will seek out again. I went into this book knowing very little about South Asian culture and mythology and this book certainly left me wanting to learn more!

I’ve set a goal for myself of learning more about non-western mythologies, and this anthology was such a fantastic dive into a bunch of them! It’s also fun starting to recognize some characters across stories I’ve read and seeing how things can be adapted and rewritten.
