I think I had unfairly high expectations for this book after all the hype about it being The New Fantasy Thing. I was expecting something mind-blowing; instead it's "just" a fun adventure romp. Mind, there's lot to be said for it being that.

Quibbles: I didn't feel as attached to the characters as I ought to have done, and they all felt a little archetypal. The worlds felt a little bit one-dimensional, which I suppose is part of the point. But it's a quick page turner and fun and you could do a lot worse for an afternoon.

This was a little darker (grittier?) than I usually read, but I really enjoyed it overall!

I loved our main characters, Kell and Lila. I especially loved them interacting together. I'm really excited to continue the series because I want to read more about them.

The world building in the book is really cool. The concept of four Londons is interesting, especially the way that concept interacts with the magic system. The blood magic was cool and I thought VE Schwab did a really good job with not making it too grotesque (though there are a couple scenes with the bad guys that were hard for me to read).

The ending was tied up well, though it felt a little anticlimactic. I think I was hoping for more from Lila, but hopefully that will come in the next books!

Overall, if you enjoy fantasy, this is (as everyone says) a great read.

I really liked this book. The fantastical world was really thought out and there was some really interesting foreshadowing. The reason I docked it a star is because I know this is a trilogy but since it didn't end on a cliffhanger so I'm not compelled to pick up the next. I will at some point pick it up but I felt it was good as a stand-alone.

This book was phenomenal and all I have to say is that V. E. Schwab is a goddess.
