I'll start by saying this was a wildly inventive, entertaining read. My problem is that at times it felt so aggressively weird that it was almost annoying. I don't really know what to make of this book in the end. The other reviewer who likened it to asking a three year old to tell you a story is not wrong. Entertaining, but ultimately I have no idea what to do with it. So three stars it is, although my hand did waver over four stars for a moment because it IS so entertaining. By the way, if you enjoy this, you might also like The Book Of Lost Things by John Connolly.

Loved The Hike! Take a stroll with Ben, a married father of three, as he encounters a journey like no other. More than once. Along the way, he encounters a talking crab, numerous monsters, rabid dogs, and his innermost hopes, dreams, and fears.
The Hike would be an excellent read for the reluctant high school reader. A couple of PG-13 moments at most.

Very fast-paced with quippy dialog and absurdist happenings along a questionable, but required, path. It's a fun story with a resolution that has me debating how I feel about the story as a whole. The twist at the end, literally the last page in my book, feels like either it was the starting point for brainstorming this plot or a random "what if" suggestion when the author couldn't decide how to end the book itself. So because of that...oddity of it all, it lessened the impact of the book imo - feels very much like the author did NOT want this to be misconstred as religious commentary and so instead of ending with "the Executive Producer" spot, chose to end it with a "whoaaa both of them experienced this" reveal.
Overall, I did like this. Just not as much at the end as I'd hoped.

“she looked older….maybe ten or twenty years” TWENTY YEARS i loved this book the pain of always having some individualized trauma you can never fully share or realize but the compassionate understanding that comes from choosing to live and making a life for yourself from those around you have silently experienced similar feelings and having the reader understand the path is different for everyone based on the experiences in which they were born into i loved. Overall a great message within a hellscape of sci-fi horror of the narrators own doing one of my more recent favorite endings
