Bridget Jones's Diary
Helen Fielding
As a single woman in her thirties, Bridget Jones's problems all stem from one undeniable life truth: women's fertility has a "sell-by" date, which creates a fundamental inequality between men and women. While this fact could be depressing if you think too much about it, the appearance of the sincere and heroic Mr. Darcy offers hope for a happy ending. Bridget's hijinks are hysterical and the conversations she has with herself are so universal that it's impossible not to laugh. I... (show more)

I'm not sure how Bridget manages to keep her sense of humor when dealing with her insane mother and a slew of dating disasters, but maybe the appalling amount of alcohol she consumes on a daily basis helps. I am now resolved to try not to be a "Smug Married" and will no longer ask single friends if they are dating anyone, even though I mean no harm by it. Can't wait to watch the movie again now that I've read the book.

Haha! Loved it so much more than I ever could have expected. Though I am somewhat in a fantasy slump right now, and this was just the thing to keep me occupied from being way too early for appointments. It's also so different from the movie that I was stumped at first, realising that I didn't actually know what was going to happen next. This fact excited me and made me want to read more.
I love Bridget, just love the fact that she's such a relatable character with real problems. She's not overweight, but she thinks she is, and that thought bothers her (most of the time anyway). Following along a her year of life and struggles was pure joy that had me laughing out loud quite a lot. People looked at me on the bus.
Anyway, I love Ms Fielding's writing and how she managed it as if it were actually a diary. I can't wait to read the second one!
... might go and watch the movie again ;)
