A fun follow-up to “Keeper of Enchanted Rooms.” I even think I would say I enjoyed this more than the first (although the first was very good).

Heir of Uncertain Magic picked up right after the ending of Keeper of Enchanted Rooms. Whimbrel House was no longer haunted by an unknown specter. Merritt Fernsby recently found out that he possessed magical abilities but was unsure of what they all were or how to control them. His genealogy chart revealed past relatives with certain types of magic, but it was unknown if those were passed down to him. Magic was diluted as family trees branched out, so any abilities Merritt possessed would be weak. He was especially interested in learning how to control his ability to hear plants and animals. It was hard for Merritt to get a moment of peace without intruding thoughts from surrounding grass, trees, and other plants. The spirit of his many times great uncle, Owein, was currently living in a dog found on the island and Owein's thoughts were the most frequent in Merritt's mind. Merritt's girlfriend, Hulda Larkin, continued to be of great help when it came to magic and directed Merritt toward resources he could use. Hulda worked for BIKER, the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms. Her work with BIKER was what led her to meeting and falling for Merritt.

Hulda was called back to Boston to find out about the disappearance of her friend and the past director of BIKER, Myra Haigh. Myra had resigned from the institute after the chaos with Silas Hogwood and no one had heard from her since. Merritt planned to go with Hulda to Boston to see if he could find someone to tutor him on how to use his magical capabilities. Once Hulda arrived at BIKER, she was met with officials from LIKER, the London Institution of the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms. As LIKER oversaw BIKER, administrators had arrived to research monetary irregularities within the budget. Hulda was confused by the concerns of the LIKER officials. What they suspected was very unlike Myra. This would be something she would need to keep a close eye on and was glad to have Merritt's sharp mind to help her figure out what happened to her friend, what was going on with BIKER, and the concerns of LIKER.

This was an enjoyable sequel. I continued to enjoy the relationship between Hulda and Merritt. The reader learned a little more about both of the main characters and why they made the choices they did. It took me a bit to get into the story because I had read the first book last year, but once I was on track, the story unfolded well. I think I enjoyed the first book a bit better as the storyline was more interesting to me. It appears that a third book is in the works so I am hoping to see more of Merritt and Hulda.
