I did enjoy this book, but it did lose my attention at some points. Some of that may have been due to my lack of reading time over the past three days, though.
I found the characters fairly easy to enjoy and Captain Gregor Reindhart was a very strong, likeable character.
I do not think that I will read the next book in the series for a while, if at all, unless the summary really draws me into the story. I may reread this book at some point, because I really do think that part of my low rating for this book is due to my reading break over three days and that, if I reread this book, I could enjoy immensely.

A great crime fiction novel against the backdrop of WWII of Sarajevo. McCallin has a poetic turn of phrase and brings forth a sense of place and time. I found this book riveting and gulped it up in three days.

There are lots of military or espionage or suspense stories out there where the focus is on equipment or the world-weary amorality of the protagonist. This novel, and the earlier novel in this Luke McCallin series, are not like that. This hero is much different. First, (hope this doesn’t constitute a spoiler for anyone) if his “cause” is German success in WWII, he knows that cause is lost. The novels show different characters responding to that with fatalism or greed or rage or cynicism. McCallin’s pragmatic but principled hero responds by using the resources he has available to him—skills;companions; military rank, equipment and protocol, to improve the situation in his immediate orbit—kind of—I know things are terrible and the big picture is hopeless, but what CAN I do HERE and NOW. Highly recommended and good advice for our times.
