Not going to rate this one because I'm sure I did it 5 years ago, and that was appropriate for a first read (I LOVED IT). Reading it back was eye-opening to say the least: it was like reading it but this time with the Sight, or with a voyance rune. While I reaped the benefits of this, I also caught some of the less desirable features.

Reading it back, it is clear that this book was for world building - Clare knew what she was doing (for the most part) and set up an amazing /thing/. It is so intricate and rich and everything feeds into the next. Things move onwards and upwards! The characters will grow more loveable.

Second read (April 2023): 3 stars
I found this more enjoyable the second time around, but I was a little bored because I knew the plot points already. The character interactions in the beginning and middle are fun and charming, and kept me interested. I do think the end was way too long and messy, as well as very melodramatic. The last thirdish of the book is what takes off a star for me and the (completely unnecessary) reveal. The villain and backstories for the families are also pretty cheesy and feel superficial but we’ll see how it develops!

First read (Aug 2020): 2 stars

I made the mistake of reading the reviews for this book before I read it and the people who dislike this book REALLY dislike it, which made me skeptical if I would enjoy it or not. Luckily, I did enjoy this book. I think the reason why some people are not fans, is that the author is obviously a fanatic of Star Wars and Harry Potter and was heavily influenced by these stories. I do not have a problem with this; although I enjoyed both Star Wars and Harry Potter, I am not an obsessive fan of either and the obvious similarities did not bother me. I love the character Jace and was rooting for the blossoming romance bwtween Jace and Clary. So needless to say, without spoiling the twist at the end...I HATED THE ENDING!!! So much so that I needed a break to recover before I could read the second book!

I'm adding to my previous comment and I'm considering changing my review from 3 to 4 stars. I've had time to digest the "twist" that really ticked me off at the end and therefore caused the loss of a star, and I'm OK with it now. I'm confident the story will resolve to my liking in the end...IT BETTER!!!! So far, I am really enjoying book 2.
