KJ Charles set out to write a 1920s Golden Age pulp fiction romantic mystery and she nailed it. I love how theatric and, at times, over-the-top KJC's mysteries feel and how well they play to earlier styles and plot devices. This is a tight first installment, with a single clear arc, a mysterious external conflict and the dawning of romantic interest between our two main characters. It's an emotional journey in very few pages, and I was giddy and confused and angry and then confused again and then eventually content (or as content as you can be when both characters are probably still in some kind of mortal peril). No-one does betrayal like KJ Charles. Looking forward to the next book!

So intensely readable ahh. I am shelving it as a romance but it is more like a mystery with a bit of kissing sometimes. It was really so excellent I didn't want to put it down at any point and I have full intention of reading the next book. It reminds me of the tone of something like Grantchester and that can only be a good thing.

A thoroughly fun romp - I found myself really drawn to Will, the main character, and the many misfortunes that fall upon him. His relationship with Kim is fascinating and I can’t wait to read more about the two of them! The mystery was enjoyable, the witty banter between Will and Kim was delightful, and I don’t know about y’all but I LOVE a capable main lead. Onto the sequel!

There were parts of this book I really liked, and there were many parts that fell flat for me. I didn't like the intense focus on war which felt pro-war in some ways (Will's disapproval was very focused on a lack of support upon returning and not on the tragedy that is war as a whole). It was also tough to understand the lack of emotional reaction to Will just killing people?

This being said, Will and Kim are a fun dynamic together and Phoebe is a gem.

This was awesome! Charles managed to use lying and miscommunication in a way that didn’t make me want to pull my hair out and I absolutely adore Phoebe and Maisie!
