I thought this book was okay! A good story with good writing and pacing, but definitely overhyped. It didn’t really stand out to me as a ~great~ read. The story itself is about video games and gamers, which I’m not interested in either, but the themes of friendship and coming of age is what kept me reading.

Basically, read the blurb and if it seems interesting to you then read it! And if it doesn’t then skip it! Haha if you can’t tell I’m pretty indifferent about this book.

⚠️ Explicit language (especially at the beginning - it gets somewhat better… kind of…)

This was a wonderful, emotional, sad, beautiful book. I loved the way it is written and couldn't put it down.  The characters felt human, with their flaws and their personal challenges, and it was great to see them overcome them and grow through the story.

Beautiful and heartbreaking. The loss of loved ones several times throughout hurts. As do the gaps that ebb and grow between characters  throughout.

Zevin really nailed the balance of plot and descriptive detail. She made me interested in the nuances and decisions behind fictional video games.

The way she writes about disability, sexuality, desire and the messiness of long term relationships (friendships, romances, blends of the two), all feel real and core to the story.

"I've been blue, lately," Sam admitted. "And I wondered, how do you get over that sort of thing?" "Work helps," Sadie said. "Games help. But sometimes, when I'm really low, I keep a particular image in my mind."

"What is it?"

"I imagine people playing. Sometimes, it's one of our games, but sometimes, it's any game. The thing I find profoundly hopeful when I'm feeling despair is to imagine people playing, to believe that no matter how bad the world gets, there will always be players."
