I thought this book was okay! A good story with good writing and pacing, but definitely overhyped. It didn’t really stand out to me as a ~great~ read. The story itself is about video games and gamers, which I’m not interested in either, but the themes of friendship and coming of age is what kept me reading.

Basically, read the blurb and if it seems interesting to you then read it! And if it doesn’t then skip it! Haha if you can’t tell I’m pretty indifferent about this book.

⚠️ Explicit language (especially at the beginning - it gets somewhat better… kind of…)

This was a wonderful, emotional, sad, beautiful book. I loved the way it is written and couldn't put it down.  The characters felt human, with their flaws and their personal challenges, and it was great to see them overcome them and grow through the story.

I thought I knew what this book would be about before I read it. I was wrong.

I don't even think I can comment on it without reading it again. I have a bad habit of reading too quickly in the second half of books, because I want to know what happens. This book's second half, and really all of it, deserves a reread.

The way this book is written is stunning to say the least. I had a difficult time with some of the characters and their choices but I think that’s purposeful and real. This is a book I’ll be thinking about for a long time both for it’s artistry, character study, and it’s themes. Warning (not spoiler): this is a book that makes you self reflect a lot on your own relationships and choices.

The characters are devastatingly real and flawed. They’re not always likeable and that’s precisely why I kept reading. They felt real and I needed to see how these very real people handled trauma, love, work and friendship throughout their lives. It is extremely relatable.

Loved seeing the diverse representation- biracial, disable, asexual characters. It felt like real life.

There are some serious trigger warnings so just be aware!

Overall, I don’t think I can read this again for along time but it will definitely haunt me forever. Great book.

Loved the world of building video games- was very accessible for non-gamers.

Really good overall. Heard some complaints that it is too pretentious but I thought it worked for the book. The one part that dragged a bit for me was the part taking place in the video game - a bit too long without enough character or plot development within for me. Really good exploration of these characters and their relationships
