talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it

"I think I have been a problem all my life. Here I am where problems go."

This is a comfort thriller for all the institutionalised girls. The girls that are too hard to deal with so we hide them away. The angry and broken girls. Absolutely amazing.

I had a hard time getting invested in the story and I don't think I ever really did. The entire time I was thinking that it made me think of Maze Runner but at a boarding school.

Wilder Girls is a book that I’d been meaning to read since it came out, and it’s about what I expected.
It’s somewhat dual perspective (which I think could’ve been done better with either more of Byatt’s perspective or none at all — following the perspective of the girls as a whole), but it’s not something that set me off the book. It took me 2-3 chapters to finally get invested in the story, but it was a pretty quick read once I did. I like the Tox — I like what it represents to have each girl experience it differently, and while there are warnings of body horror and gore, it’s pretty surface level — it is YA.
There’s a fair amount of implied/off-screen character development, things we don't get to see ourselves but watch the MC find out about other characters, which is underwhelming.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. I enjoyed the ending. It’s a book I might recommend to a high schooler, and I definitely wish I had read it when I first meant to because it probably would’ve been rated higher.

3.5. Having also read Burn Our Bodies Down, I think Rory Power and I just have different ideas about what makes a good ending. I LOVED the slow burn mystery and the horror elements. I loved each of the girls’ distinct personalities. But I felt like the explanation for everything was a bit rushed. If there is indeed a sequel, then it’s a solid place to end, but last I heard, Power was only toying with maybe doing one, so that makes it feel less compelling on its own. I would definitely read a sequel, though.

Hmm. There was a lot I enjoyed about this--the island vibes, the survivalism, the sapphic relationship. Overall, I didn't feel like this story said much. It is being promoted as a feminist story, but I didn't get any messaging in this book that was particularly feminist--not particularly anything really. Things just happened and then it ends. And the ending didn't work for me. No resolution and not in a good way where it makes you think.
