It has been years since I have been able to read fiction for fun, let alone in about a week. I tore through this book, happy to see queer character representation, as well as an intriguing and somewhat reality grounded plot. Emotionally difficult to read at times I had to take pauses. What a read to find that was written  a year pre pandemic about disease.

This was not what I thought it would be at all but if I didn't enjoy the hell out of it anyway, tho.
It's actually gross, so don't read it if you're squeamish. But otherwise? Who doesn't love some good ol' wlw romance?

A fun, dark read. I really liked the claustrophobic school-in-the-middle-of-nowhere atmosphere and the horror elements. It definitely pulled off the weird, horrifying aspect well. My only complaint is that the ending was really unsatisfying - a lot of questions were left unanswered and it felt like the story could have been longer.

I liked the horror elements. The world it was set in and the body horror. The writing was good and I enjoyed Byatts perspectives. All in all, the first half of the book was good, the second half towards the end felt really rushed with everything happening at once. I didn’t really understand the way the ending is supposed to work in the context of a standalone.

Spoiler I feel like the romance between hetty and reese could’ve been set up/kept up better. It didn’t feel out of nowhere but they didn’t really linger on any tension either. I liked that they went into the guilt of hetty killing Mr. Harker and that Reese doesn’t just easily forgive her and I think their dynamic had a lot of potential that just wasn’t really used to its full extend.
