Perfect read heading into Fall. Very eerie and cerebral. However, it should be a CRIME to have 30-50+ page chapters. Overall enjoyed this read, but it could’ve been a lot shorter and would’ve been a better reading experience if the chapters weren’t so long.

the narrator being unreliable really adds to the personal interpretations. the bacchanal and Richard not being there adds another layer to the lack of reliability in any of the characters take on what happens

This book is very comparable to movie Saltburn in the sense that they both tragically fail at representing and continue to perpetuate the issues they are meant to be commentaries of. This very much reads like it was written by a rich white nepo baby & I have so many issues with it. Pretty much every -ism/-obia occurs in here in super unnecessary & gross ways & it got to the point where I was only holding on to be able to say that i’ve read it. The second star is because I’ll give Donna the grace that at times there’s some really good quotes in here, & I found Henry to be a pretty well written character, but quite frankly fuck this book overall.

Modelled after a Greek tragedy, with its flawed and lost protagonist and cast of equally flawed and lost secondary characters, a murder and the subsequent unravelling of life as they know it, this book is a tragedy in the purest form of the word.

If you go into this book expecting a murder mystery, you will be disappointed. This book is long, and we find out how the murder happens halfway through. For the remainder, Tartt takes us on a deep dive into the individual fatal flaws of all characters involved and slowly picks away at all of the strings holding their lives together.

This book is an excellent study on perspective and how easily it can be distorted and on the deceptive nature of appearances. It takes a close look at humanity, and how far we can stretch the meaning of the word.

Do check content warnings for this one, as it takes many dark turns!
