Please don't judge me, but I loved this book. I think I just read it at the right time and in the right place (on an airplane). The murder scenes felt super campy to me, and it made all the violence and gore tolerable. The sex scenes in this book were absolutely filthy. I felt like this book had more smut than Ali Hazelwood's books. I immediately downloaded the second book in the series (Leather & Lark) because I had to read about Lachlan and Lark. Butcher & Blackbird goes all in on the friends to lovers trope. If you liked the television show Dexter, you might enjoy all of the scenes of killing a serial killer in this book. The first half is angst and murders and the second half of the book is smut. Also, all of the scenes with Rowan working as a chef made me think of the television show The Bear. My one criticism of this book was the extreme time jumps to fast forward 1 year.

Content: mentions of sexual abuse, extremely graphic sex, violence, gore, death, cannibalism

I loved the dual narration of this book. The story dragged a bit to start but, I enjoyed it.

I went into this book pretty blind and picked it up based on the crazy good reviews.
THIS BOOK WAS DARK AF
but somehow also a romcom in a very twisted way.
I could not put it down and the plot twist
I texted my bestie when it happened and I quote “bruh….you are going to shit a brick”
Can’t wait to read the next book
ALSO THE FUCKING EPILOGUE IM DEAD

This should’ve been two different books - a serial killer romance novel and a chef romance novel, but instead they were crudely crammed into one book. If you’re going to make both your main characters lovable serial killers, you need to commit. The author didn't and consequently I never bought either of them as killers. They had zero killer traits outside of their actual killing. In the scenes where they are killing, they felt like completely different people. I wish I had gotten to spend more time with those people bc they were way more interesting than the normal versions of themselves. I never even understood why Rowan liked killing or what motivated him. The whole serial killer plot (the MAIN fucking plot) felt completely unfinished.

This book was also SO gory in ways it did not earn. I don’t even mind gore. It was just so out of place in this otherwise tame book.

The dialogue was atrocious, I could barely get through their stupid “banter.” And some parts barely even made sense, like
why did he fly there just to hide behind a tree?? If you had no plans to see her or talk to her, wouldn’t it have been easier to just Instacart her the ingredients from Boston?? Has this author never heard of Postmates or...? I know delivery fees are high but they’re definitely not the $500 you paid some random kid.
I am so confounded by this plot choice.

I think the worst part was
the intensely rough sex scene that took place hours after she was severely injured. Maybe I’m CRAZY, but I just don’t enjoy sex scenes when one character has a fresh, grievous injury.
WEIRD, I know.

Wow I wish every audiobook with dual pov came with duet narration; it really elevated the story for me! I wasn’t sure if I’d vibe with this end of the spectrum of dark romance since there are some pretty graphic scenes involving murder. I think if you like true crime you will probably be okay with the level of gore, unless you’re eating while listening😵‍💫. This is more of a romcom serial killer adventure book than it is dark romance. There are a lot of crossover tropes like touch her/him and die, but I don’t ever expect to laugh while reading dark romance and I laughed a lot during this book! I can definitely see myself rereading and I’m excited to read the next book.

I really appreciated the author's thoughtfulness of putting a list of trigger warnings at the beginning of the book. I also felt personally attacked by the statement following those warnings:

For those of you who read the trigger warnings and said, "Accidental cannibalism?! Count me in!" This one's for you.

Excited to read Leather and Lark next! I bought it when I was about halfway thru B&B.
