The main character is insufferable and the writing style is erratic.

The writing is too hectic and if you don't know anything about "slashers" you will be confused all the time.

I have no idea why I gave this book so many chances, because I normally have no problem DNFing books that just aren’t for me. I have watched ONE slasher film in my whole life, so that wasn’t the draw. It was probably Jade, the main character, and me hoping against hope that she was more than an unreliable narrator. She was. I was ready to give the book 3 stars until the very last few pages, and what Jade experienced made me give it a fourth star.

I sincerely enjoyed reading My Heart is a Chainsaw. It followed a girl named Jade, who is obsessed with slashers. She begins to notice signs around her own small, isolated town that a slasher of her very own may be starting up.

I know this book is definitely not for everybody. It definitely has its quirks that I enjoyed, but I could easily see why those quirks would annoy someone else. I enjoyed the information dumping and random facts about slashers. It was fascinating to read! I loved the essays in between and the obsession with the ‘final girl’ trope. This book spent a lot of time talking about final girls. My Heart is a Chainsaw did not really pick up until the last half or so. The beginning felt a little drawn out and repetitive, but when it picked up, it picked up. Reading the trigger warnings for this book is essential; please do not go into it blind. There are some very serious topics discussed, and the book does get very graphic.

The ending felt slightly incomplete, but I enjoyed it. Jade was a wonderful narrator. And I swear to God that I am going to get my grubby little hands on the sequel as soon as physically possible.
