All time favorite. It gets better with each rereading!

Listened to Andy Serkis read it, which was delightful.

Thorin and the dwarves’ greed struck me a little harder this time through, and I was glad for his moment of redemption. The contrast between them and Bilbo stuck out. But I wonder, what is worse—a love of money and jewels or a love of comfort and food? Can they not both lead to selfishness and unwise choices? But even in that, Bilbo does not return to Bagend the same hobbit.

Now I watched the movies before I read the book. There are positives to both forms of the story. I wish there was more development for all of the dwarves in the books, that they all had personalities outside of being a part of the company. Also wished there was more focus on the action, vs just saying that something happened. I enjoyed Tolkien's sense of humor and rhythm. I listened to a version of the audiobook while reading along so it helped me appreciate the songs more. I loved writing little jokes about how the language Tolkien used as it has new meanings in our present day.
'If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.'

I'm not sure what it was specifically about it—was it the poor pacing, the dry writing, the awkward dialogue, the impersonal characters? I'm not sure. But regardless, it's just...not at all engaging. I wanted to just suck it up and power through it but after nearly two years and three failed attempts to finish, I doubt I'll actually get the motivation to finish it, which was wholly disappointing seeing how influential and praised that this book is. I just wish it weren't so mind-numbingly boring.

While I enjoyed the descriptions of the Hobbit hole and the connections that developed between Bilbo and the dwarves, there was still a lot of fighting and warfare. Sort of a weird juxtaposition between cozy and violent.
