"hiro in tokyo, sven in stockholm, nigel in london, jean paul in paris" could these name choices be any more cliche oh my god

not that i particularly cared for katherine but she seemed better than in the original series, was two times not enough for her to die. okay well i guess she faked the first death but still, that was pretty awful, especially since she was damon's only friend at the moment

i know they brought damon back before so it's no big deal but stefan's death WAS pretty shocking. i knew jack gave off bad vibes. admittedly i thought that about samantha and zander bc in the same way it's like "oh this person who's exactly what you need just shows up, it seems convenient" and i was wrong on those two but like. i was right on this one

also i really didn't like stefan saying elena's the only person in the world to him, not only because it's like, hello way too codependent, but also because at this point, i don't think that's remotely accurate to his character? he's been friends with the others for at least five years at this point and protected them and literally has a rhythm with meredith and everything like?? true, he would want to protect elena over anything else, but he would not see her as the only thing that matters

i found the hashtag thing annoying and kind of embarrassing. plus reading it like 9 years after the release or whatever it makes it seem dated like no one is using these, if they ever did lmao

i WILL say i think this person is a little better of a writer than lj smith and the previous ghostwriter. lj smith did a pretty good job with the original series, at least for the time it was written in, but came back a decade later and just like, demolished her own work (very joss whedon of her actually). really, this series couldn't be salvaged after that second series, but at least it's a little tolerable. no "lovely little love" or "my princess of darkness" embarrassing shit, so that's nice. nor was it so love triangle-y, there were just like hints, instead of it being like it always was before where elena "chose" stefan but was still obsessing over damon and whatever. ANYWAY, can't wait to finish this and be free <3

ALSO i do think it's fucked up if lj smith was truly kicked off the series or whatever that they would still use her picture and bio at the end of the book?? like whatever if you use her name on the cover for consistency so there's no confusion about it being part of the same series but like this is not her work, i feel like that shouldn't be allowed

It wasn’t terrible, and I loved some of the interactions. Bonnie and Zander are my favorite couple to read about other than Meredith and Alaric. I just have a feeling this whole Salvations sections of the series is just going to feel like an overly long epilogue, that it’s not adding anything to the actual story. So I’m torn about this book, hence the 3 stars.

This book was a positive surprise! I didn't like the last trilogy so much, for different reasons, and wanted to see if they could make it up with this trilogy. The start is really promising. It's like they "reset" the characters by making them a few years older, and picking up the storyline over there. The characters felt right this time, the arcs fitted them, and they did away with the "main character invulnerability" that bothered me in the last books (no matter how powerful the enemy was, all main characters survived unharmed) by killing of Stefan in the end. That did kind of shock and surpise me. Of course everything is still possible, we've seen what happened to Elena and Damon before, but still...
I liked the storyline, Solomon was a good villain, and I liked the way they treated him, and the even bigger evil they introduced in the last part was great and promising for the rest of the trilogy. I can't wait until the next book is published, and that was something I was missing in the last trilogy.

Priceless! Smith has outdone herself once again with the gang’s quest to defeat the last Old One, even with death and strife hindering their every decision.

It's around 3.25/3.50 stars. It's slightly better than the previous series. I was excited that Katherine is back, I was expecting a lot of fun things from her. But of course, it's not meant to be. And of course, because the world is unfair, Stefan will be miraculously resurrected, but she won't. I was about to say good riddance to his loss. Book Stefan is even worse than TV show Stefan.
