I really liked seeing this story from Valek's point of view. The romance was a little more heavy-handed than in the original Poison Study book, since it seems that Valek had feelings for Yelena long before she admitted to it herself, but it was neat to see what else was going on when Yelena was off-screen.

Is he canonically bi? is he actually a baby killer? how many times will he mention their inappropriate age gap? questions i didn't have 10 years ago that are now answered thanks to this book. Valek, you'll always be one of my first loves, but growing up and maturing means realising that you're really just a weird guy. 3.5 ⭐️

Valek's POV of the study of Poisons, what we have all been waiting for! And of boy was it worth the wait. It ties in so well with the study of poisons and yet can be read alone if required. But all the links and connections to the main story, while showing Valek's true feelings (these are well masked in Poison Study) was just amazing. Maria's writing has improved here too (though it was always excellent anyway) and that just allows the story to really flow. We also see more of our favorite side characters Janco and Ari, and get to know more about them too which I loved. If you like Maria V. Snyder, this is another book you'll love! Poison, magic, spies, politics, assassination attempts, life and death and all-round excellence.
