If I write too much I'll gush. This is the best bit of fantasy that I've read in a long while. You should read it too. Yes, you. Even if you don't like fantasy. You can't regret it.

Bought the whole thing - all three novels and the novella - for seriously cheap on kindle (it was even cheap with European VAT added, which is not always the case). A highly recommended purchase, a perfect summer read. Go buy and read etc. etc. etc.

(I read it a while ago, but I didn't have my own copy, remedied that today and now I want to spread the gospel I guess.)

(This also means that I now own all N.K. Jemisin books! \o/ The Dreamblood on paper, one book in translation and one in English, and these novels as ebooks. I also may have already pre-ordered The Fifth Season.)

There is so much I could say about this book, and I know I could not possibly hope to capture all my feelings in this review but I will do my best. This book is stellar. The characters are rich, the plot is excellent, and the twists are gut-wrenching. Each book in the series follows a different character, but they are all connected and fully thought out. Rarely does a sequel that switches protagonists manage to keep hold of my attention and interest, but this series did so not only once but twice. The time and scale of the story is so impossibly epic that i am still not sure how it managed to contain all of it within these pages. This trilogy is stellar, and has everything I could want: romance, action, intrigue, philosophy, political critiques, and most of all heart. The length of the series may seem daunting but I promise you it is worth it.

A book series about political intrigue/machinations in a fantasy world, but mostly about gods and the intricacies of love.

I'm disappointed that I didn't like this more. It was creative and clearly well written, and I think people who are more spiritual or enjoy reading about Gods and more abstract things might enjoy this, I however had to unfortunately discover while reading this that I have absolutely no interest in reading about Gods and it made me quite tired trying to get through this bind up.

I enjoyed the second book more than the first, but even then I found it dragged in places. I ended up picking up the audiobook from my library to ccomplete the remainder of it, and the audiobook was well done and I accredit it entirely as the reason I managed to push myself and finish this book.

I also struggled to connect with any of the characters, something about the writing style was odd to me and I didn't enjoy it.

I however, seem to be in a minority of people who this didn't click with, and I think you should take my review and rating with a grain of salt, I would say try a chapter or two before deciding if you would like to get this book, as all of my complaints could have been avoided if I'd listened to my gut when starting the book, instead of trying to push myself through it despite knowing I didn't connect with the writing style.
