I'm a huge fan of Hodge's work, and this is her best yet--delivering the wholly reimagined folktale she excels at with deeply felt questions about heroism and faith.
Lia thinks she's saving her world when she enters the briar to kill the sorceror Ruven. When she encounters a boy who recognizes too much about her own need to be a hero, she still kills him. But nothing is as simple as she was raised to believe--not saving the nation she loves, not being devoted to the gods, and certainly not forgotting the boy she killed. Because he's now haunting her, and their theological differences can't trump the way he alone understands what it is to be used when you want desperately to matter.
This is a dark fairy tale rich with complexity, haunting imagery, and a heroine so earnest it hurts.

Fantastic! Perfect! Please give me more with these characters!

I loved every second of this book. Lia and Ruven were such interesting characters to follow. Just their odd dynamic and messed up actions were hard to ignore or resist. I loved how dark and morbid this story went and how flawed every person involved showed themselves to be. This story showed the horrors and desperation that can come as a result of yearning for love and acceptance.

Previously I had read Cruel Beauty from this author. And while I enjoyed it, this one was even better. I would highly recommend people pick this one up. Even if you are hesitant about it being a Sleeping Beauty retelling, it takes it to new dimensions.

Oh wow, I loved reading this book, it was such a great read on faith and right and wrong, and I utterly adored it!

Annoying, pathetic and stupid heroine who thinks she knows it all and has got all the valour to “right the things”. My god, she was so fcking unlikeable. The plot was obnoxiously boring and the romance betweenthe MCs doesn’t even make any sense; seemed more like an attempt to be edgy and unique when it was anything but that
