I’ve never read a book with the trigger warnings that are in here, and while I handled it well, I don’t think it’s something I can read about too much. Especially since it was a lot of detail for this book.

I thought this was really good. It deals with the themes of loss, grief, sacrifice, mental illness and motherhood. I like how ambiguous the story is. You don’t really know what to believe. I always find that aspect of horror, and stories of mental illness, really interesting. Is there really a demon or dark force manipulating the main character and exposing all of their weaknesses and vulnerabilities? Or is it just a metaphor for real life situations. Is her son really coming to visit her or is she suffering from depression and / or other mental illnesses. I read this based off a recommendation, saying if you liked Pet Semetary, you might like this. There is an obvious connection, but that’s one of my favorite parts of Stephen King’s books. Some evil force manipulating and exacerbating the weaknesses of his main characters. He makes personal demons into real demons, and I think the author here did something similar.

This was an intriguing short story., It definitely keeps your attention. This is a good audio book for road trips with your non reader partners.

I really enjoyed this author’s prose, they were tight and crisp. The main character had real depth and complexity.

The plot was different but the twist was predictable and the pace was slow. The love interest’s acquiesce to the main characters behavior was utterly unbelievable. There was too much focus on internal dialogue and backstory. More action would have sweetened the plot.

I would give the author another read but I was not a fan of this one.

4.5 * I have said it a thousand times before I love the theme of grief in horror, truly one of my favorite things. This was heartbreaking and disturbing.

As a mother, I get it. It was brutal and heartbreaking and completely relatable.

It lost a star because I just don’t believe the relationship between Chris and Dan. I didn’t believe they were that in love…but, it’s not a romance so I’m not terribly bothered by it.
