This book is full of angst and could be triggering but it is an amazing read. Roman and Leo where just fifteen when the met and fell in love. Leo, the son of a judge was a good boy with a rich family and Roman was poor with a father that was a criminal. Together they shared their love and made plans for the future.
Unfortunately they didn't plan on being seen by Roman's brother and Roman suffered trauma as a result of loving another boy. In order to protect himself be buries his feeling for 12 years, leaving Leo behind and feeling unloved.
12 years later they met again. This is a 2nd chance romance where Roman and Leo have to work through childhood abuse and mental health issues to come out on the otherside. IT's an emotional journey well worth the read.

These characters felt one dimensional to me. They were their traumas with no real traits aside from that.
And there was so much repetition. Which I find annoying.
And please don’t tell me how brave a character is while only showing me the opposite.
This one was not for me.

We often underappreciate the role that trauma and PTSD play in shaping our love life. Especially when they are forgotten or repressed. This second chance love had to journey through past hurts to heal.

This was, I think, my first book by this author. It was on my TBR for a while and when I realized the narrator was Joel Leslie I decided to dive in.

It was pretty well-edited, which is always important to me. The storyline itself was very much centered on the two MCs and the development of their relationship. Aside from the flashbacks, there was no real external plot development until the last 5% or so or the book. The characters were engaging enough, and I appreciated the gradual exposition of what happened in their past.

This was a very good (smutty) book, but MY GOD THE TRAUMA. My heart broke over and over for Roman and Leo, even as they healed and grew together. If you are not prepared to read some unflinching descriptions of homophobic violence, internalized homophobia, and PTSD, this might not be the book for you. If you can handle it, I highly recommend it.
