I had a problem with this book. Nolan emphasises the fact that the labeling of "the Knight´s Tale" as a romance is problematic. But the way the "roman antique"is explained through the book, I find no diferences between what is known in romances as "the matter of rome" and the so called "roman antique". Some authors regard the concept as synonyms, so the argument was hard to follow, because i think it wasn´t clear. Is the matter of Rome a kind of romance or it should be regarded as a nother different form of literature? nowhere i found that explained.
