Maybe it's because I've mostly been reading fantasy, but I found this book almost boring.

Lets start with the good thing I can say. The characters were well written and the author didn't shy away from the ugliness of the war and all events after. The writing style was also good.

It was the jumping through time and the rather ambiguous ending that made this a 2 star for me. There is no true closure on any of the plotpoints and the little closure we do get is told from a character that I couldn't  care less about.

Beautifully written, devastatingly sad, very likely something that could’ve happened, nonetheless full of hope.

A beautiful and heartbreaking portrayal of the cost of war, and who pays the price: innocent civilians choosing sides from ideologies they don't believe in.
It follows 3 orphan children as the Vietnam War spills into Laos, and the aftermath that follows.

A book that was less developed on the political criticism (and that's putting it nicely) but weaved together tangential relationships based on "need" and "now" that never truly leave you.

A wonderful novel spanning decades of friendship, loss, and displacement. Paul Yoon centres on three friends and the people they meet during a violent war and its aftermath, to tell a story that is heartbreaking, poignant, and at times hopeful.
War is terrible. Imperialism is horrific. Justice is scarcely found.
