Very fun. Thoroughly enjoyable. Not completely believable in terms of miscommunication issues. Also completely dropped the promotion plotline. Surprisingly, I liked the
pregnancy plotline- tied into the themes of the book well
. The man narrator got a lot better from her previous book

As always, a happy ever after romance, but it sure takes its time getting there.

Briana, a scorned woman caring for her brother, and Jacob, a scorned man struggling with social anxiety, collide when Jacob gets a job as an ER physician at the hospital where Briana works in the same role. Briana is angry with men in general after her ex husband leaves her after having an affair (much in the same way her father disappeared from her life when she was a child). She is left picking up the pieces of her life while trying to give hope to her brother who has kidney failure. Jacob is new to the hospital because he left the job where his ex-girlfriend, who happens to now be dating Jacob’s brother, works. Both have issues to sort through, and both do it in very different ways.

This story has it all - fake dating, enemies to friends to lovers. The miscommunication is heavy in this book - frustrating at times (especially for how long it went on) but also believable and relatable. Briana wants to believe the worst in Jacob based on her trauma with men, and Jacob is worrying about everything but what Briana is worried about. The cute moments in a lot of ways make up for the lengthy miscommunication. Jacob and Briana write letters to each other and eat lunch in the supply closet as an easier way for Jacob to communicate with his social anxiety (swoon). The period of time where they are getting to know each other is the best of the book. It is full of quirks - with Briana’s get to know you questions (would you eat me if I was a gummy bear?) and Jacob’s anxiety about parking situations and menus. Jacob’s family is a story all of its own - the taxidermy room full of road kill, the sex expert mom, and the grandpa who will threaten anyone for cigarettes.

But there is a great balance of thoughtful with the funny. It gives a lesson about showing up for those you love, and the importance of agreeing to be harmless to each other.  It tackles mental health issues - Jacob’s “what if” anxiety spirals that are often completely inaccurate. Briana dealing with her past traumas. At one point, Joy, Jacob’s mother, states “depression lies” but so does anxiety, and they both have to get past their mental health illnesses to see the truth.

I have gotten this far without mentioning the gift Jacob gives to Briana’s brother. In many ways, it feels like a separate story to me and not part of their romance. Yes, Jacob does give this gift in some ways to make Briana happy. But really, it’s the perfect mixture of a kind soul, prior experience with a family member going through something similar, a best friend that happens be an expert in the area, etc. Although it feels like a huge gift, Abby Jimenez makes it feel like a natural decision.

If you have not read this book yet, definitely read Part of Your World first. The main characters from that book play a pretty significant side character role in this book (but later in time, so there are spoilers).

The lack of communication between the two main characters drove me batty through a big portion of the book (made for more drama!), but I liked the premise and how to ended.
