Chris and Kate build a boat from driftwood they find on the beach and set off on an epic adventure. They set off to sail around the world, accompanied by Holly the dog. Where will they go? What will they see? But adventures are rarely straightforward: there are always lessons to be learned and usually sacrifices to make. Chris, Kate and Holly are shipwrecked on an island, isolated from the world they know where they find wisdom to be acquired and shared. There are also dreams to experience and interpret. And what about returning to their families?

After a year and a day, Chris, Kate and Holly need to leave the island, but how can they return home when the Pearl of the Seas is wrecked?
Although this is the prequel to Ruth Finnegan’s ‘Black Inked Pearl’, it was written later. ‘Voyage of Pearl of the Seas’ is an easier read than ‘Black Inked Pearl’ and serves to provide important background to that story. Personally, I’d recommend reading ‘Voyage’ first. I’d recommend reading it aloud and stopping to enjoy Rachel Blackshall’s illustrations.
