Funny mystery. Sort of like Hiassen in Texas. Good series

I got this for free off of bookbub and although hunting isn't my interest I enjoyed the book. The author writes very well and it is certainly a pleasure to read such skilled writing. The premise of the book is interesting. His style is to jump around a bit and he always had several scenes going at the same time and would get to a mini cliff hanger in one and then switch to another. I had to get used to this.

While the premise was good there are quite a few characters (that were pretty well fleshed out) and several scenes going on, but some of the minor scenes just stop and were there maybe to just add something to the main scene. Also the ending was a little hard to believe and kind of came out of nowhere. I wish there were more authors like Donald Westlake who could make outrageously plausible endings, not just outrageous ones.

Like many other reviewer I agree the author is very reminiscent of Carl Hiaasen in the sort of crazy characters and situations presented. I don't consider either Rehder of Hiaasen to be comic writers however, the situation is humorous but more in the whimsical way but not comic as say Christopher Moore is.

There is some profanity and some crude characters but I didn't find this offensive. I would note because a lot of the free books I get are mysteries written by women that women appear to write very differently than men. You can almost always easily determine the gender of the author. I say this, because this is sort of a man's man kind of book, hunting, beer, red necks and few women who mostly exist for the lead to have someone to have sex with.
