Spoiler Xifeng’s descent into madness/evil
is almost there. The back and forth between love and respect and abuse that Xifeng feels is often visceral. I really enjoyed the plot and didn’t catch of the turns coming at me.

This book was mindblowing.
I knew that when I picked up this book, the FMC was a hero meant to be a villain. But never have I expected to hate such character. Some people may call her an “antihero”, but I beg to defi.
She is someone who has light and dark within her, but as the story goes, darkness is the one who seeks at the end. She will do anything to become the Empress even pulling the former empress down and also leaving a man who loves her dearly.
I am flabbergasted and upset. I have to read the second book asap. I honestly wished the downfall for the FMC, for the first time in my life. I don’t think the author is gonna do that tough.

I know this is an anti-hero story, setting her up to be the villain of the sequel, but I detested the main character and just couldn't keep going. Her relationship with Wei feels built on nothing but having been near each other. They have no chemistry and it seems like they barely even talk. I like it when characters have good reasons to try and do a bad thing, but this seemed like she's determined to make terrible decisions in order to live up to what her abuser wants, knowing that Guma was abusive. I don't like any of it and I'm stopping.

Look, this seems really effective as a villain origin story and I realized I really really don't like Villain origin stories.
