This book was exactly as promoted zombies and gay love. I did enjoy this book and I will definitely be reading the next one. This book was however really slow to get going for me I feel it didn’t really fully grip me till just before half way which made the first half of the book a little hard to get though. I did however enjoy the book overall.

Did I pick this book up for the cover? Yes, of course I did.

Peter is a teenager who lives on the islands of Wranglestone which is a safe haven from the Restless Dead. But every year during winter, the lakes freeze over leaving the community vulnerable to the undead. As Peter gets older, he’s forced onto the mainland to help protect everyone but he soon unearths a dark secret that will make him question everything he’s ever known.

Things I liked:
- the love story - while it was pretty much instalove, it was a cute love story between two teenage boys.
- the setting - i don’t read too much zombie/apocalypse books so i don’t really know if it’s been done before, but i enjoyed the idea of the characters living on an island to protect themselves from the zombies.
- the secret - i didn’t really know what to expect when going into the book, but i did enjoy the secret and the reveal of it.

Things I didn’t like:
- the ending - i didn’t dislike the ending, but it seemed fairly rushed compared to the rest of the book. there is a sequel though and i will definitely read it at some point!
- the characters - i didn’t hate the characters but i felt they could’ve been a bit more fleshed out
3.5 stars overall

I read this in two days, the action and plot were amazing and I was really invested in that aspect of this book,, but it kind of goes downhill when you look at the rest of it.

The characterisation wasn’t brilliant, idk but I feel like the characters lent into stereotypes too much. They all felt very unrealistic to me, and the character development had little prompting or else there just wasn’t any.

The romance didn’t feel too forced, but incredibly rushed. They had a few interactions and then immediately went around professing their love for each other

I have mixed feelings about this book. It was a quick, rather pleasant read, but the further into the story the worse it got. I can say I liked it if I don't think about it too much. But if I'm being completely honest it was worse than I'd expected.
The idea was cool, the setting very matched the vibe, and the zombies!
But the pacing and the jumping from one scene to another threw me off more than once.
The whole story took place over the span of just a couple of days, which made it unbelievable and unrealistic (not that zombies are realistic but you get what I mean). It would be much better if the author stretched it out to at least a couple of weeks. Plus don't start me on running around after being stabbed and shot, one of my biggest pet peeves.
Am I excited about the sequel? Not really, I really don't think that there's much more to be explored. Am I going to read it? Yes, I wanna see what else the author does with the characters.
So 3 stars it is because I read it in 2 days, finished it and I can't say I hated it, it was just okay.

I loved the characters in the book, but my favourite part was definitely the plot and how the suspense was maintained throughout the book. It allowed the reader to guess some plot twists without being too obvious. It's definitely one of my favourite thriller books in that sector.
The writing was incredibly raw and so emotional that I related to the characters so much, and they felt so much more real. The talk that Peter had with Mr Schmidt was so heartfelt that it made my own heart hurt slightly (and I'm not even going to mention how crushed I was when Cooper 'died').
Cooper and Peter's story was so sweet, and the way the book handled the romance without withdrawing from the action was incredible.
The only criticism I have of it is that at the end Peter raises so many good questions, that don't even get acknowledged, making the ending slightly disappointing. I know that there is a sequel planned, but the ending felt unfulfilled and slightly rushed, and I genuinely said "that's it?" out loud. It just felt like there was going to be so much more until there wasn't.
Overall a really strong 4/5, and it was the book that got me out of my reading slump.

I just didn’t find the plot interesting and the writing style was pretty confusing
