Reagan is hitting the road on tour with her megastar best friend, Taylor Swift Lilah Montgomery, known to her as Dee. She and Dee are both excited to leave recent heartbreaks behind and embark together on a summer of fun and distraction. When a PR crisis results in clean-cut singer Matt Finch crashing their party, sparks fly between him and bad-girl Reagan, but she struggles to keep him at a distance. As the summer goes on, both girls learn to let love in again. Despite the celebrity setting of this book, it and the characters felt really authentic, and I loved that the girls' solid friendship is the real center of the story.

The marketing blurb - "Taylor Swift meets Sarah Dessen" is spot on for this novel. A cute story of best friends and new love. (Detailed Review to come)

Love, love, love this book.

So I kept hearing all about this book called Open Road Summer and then my sister read it and was almost ready to push Jase (from My Life Next Door) off her list for this Matt Finch guy and based on that alone, I knew I had to read it. I am officially on the Matt Finch bandwagon and he is sitting on my Swoony Book Boyfriends bookshelf.

This was such a wonderful book. It has lovely (and flawed) characters, a fantastic story, and Emery Lord weaves all of this together with music...one of my favorite things.

Reagan has had a rough time lately and decides that it might be a great idea to get away from things by going on tour with her best friend Dee who happens to be a super popular country music star. It is clear that there are some things going on with Reagan but Lord does a good job of slowly sharing them with the reader. Almost immediately, a story gets to the entertainment “news” world that could hurt Dee’s clean cut image and the solution her record label comes up with is to have another artist on the label open Dee’s shows and hopefully alleviate some of the potential bad press.

You guessed it – Matt Finch is that other artist and immediately Reagan is a bit suspicious – mostly because she is super protective of Dee. He has been out of the limelight for a number of years and she thinks he is only doing this to further his music career. As she starts to learn more about Matt Finch (yeah…I have a hard time just calling him Matt), she comes to realize there is more to him than his career.

Matt Finch has also had a tough time lately. His mother recently passed away and when the call came in asking him to open for Dee’s shows, he leapt at the opportunity to get away and think about something else. As he gets to know more and more about Reagan, he is drawn to her and all I can say is that when he writes music for her….I may have sighed out loud for how perfect it was. He’s not afraid to challenge her and make her open her eyes and I love that about him.

I loved seeing the change in Reagan’s character from the beginning of the novel to the end. She has to grow up and figure out what is really important to her along with what she is willing to walk away from or fight for. I loved the ending and that is all I will say about that.

If you are looking for a wonderful story that ties together friendship, romance, music, and family, definitely check this one out. I’m not usually a big pusher of Contemporary Romance so you HAVE to know it is good if I am pushing this book at anyone who asks me for recommendations…..just saying.

Open Road Summer might just be another teen romance between a troubled girl and a rock star, but the heart of the story is the beautiful friendship between Lilah and Reagan. They have been inseparable, two best friends who are so in tune with each other and very perceptive of each other's feelings. The two of them go through thick and thin together, whether it is dealing with Lilah's superstardom and Reagan's heartbreak. And this summer will be the best one for both of them - until Lilah finds herself embroiled in a tabloid scandal, and her longtime friend Matt Finch comes into the limelight to distract the media from turning Lilah's wholesome image into a troubled one. Reagan finds herself attracted to Matt, but still punishes herself for what happened to her in the past. This is a story of forgiving, of accepting and of believing in how you can truly deserve the best. I truly enjoyed reading it.

I love made-up celebrity books and this one did not disappoint. A sassy, badass heroine and a sweet conclusion. A great summer read!

Yes! Another Emery Lord book that I loved!
This is the author's debut novel and I read it now because it fits in a category for 'the reading rush'.

So far, I've read all four Emery Lord books and loved them all. Of course, some a bit more than others, but her writing is always super amazing to me. I find things she says to be so real and well thought out. And I thought this one wasn't going to mark me as much because it's happening through a music tour, and the romance includes a musician, but I actually think it was very well handled. The friendship was great, the songs were cute, the whole dynamic between Reagan, Dee and Matt was pretty cool and, of course, the romance was super cute.

I guess I can say that Emery Lord is one of my favorite authors. I can't wait to read 'the map from here to there' that comes out next year!

Nothing wrong with this book (hence the 4 stars) except it was kinda one of those where the female protagonist hates every girl character that isn't her or her best friend. Other than that it was cute though.
