Overall, very good book! I started to get a little bit frustrated by all of Grace's inner dialogue--it felt *very* repetitive, and borderline unnecessary. The spots that bothered me the most were when she was having big realizations in the middle of battle scenes. It felt like there were pages of thoughts stuck in the middle of these exciting scenes.
But, that's really my only complaint! I *very* excited to see what that emerald green string is š¤ and to see how Grace and Hudson's relationship develops. I hope that they stop tip toeing around their love soon.
I probably won't reread, but I would recommend the book! š

That said, Iām now 3 books and approximately 2100 pages into this series and I have QUALMS. Questions. This isnāt a knock on this book in particular but at the fact that having read this much there are some things that should be addressed by this point. Definite spoilers below, but at this point in the series you should already know all these things.Ā
1. Hudson and Jackson (and presumably others???? Again, no idea) are centuries old. Why are they NOW, at 200+ years old, graduating high school? Surely there is a plot device that could explain this but it hasnāt been written. Normally itās a high-school-forever plot line, due to being immortal and never aging and moving around forever etc, but this is a school for paranormal that they havenāt been attending for 200 years. WHY????Ā
2. We are dangerously close to being āno plot, just vibesā. You might say ābut so much is happening!ā and you would be correct, but when it comes to fantasy some of the pillars of the genre are world building and magic systems and we get NONE of either. Some people are fine with this, I get it! But I want to understand this universe, I want to understand the factions, I want to understand the magic. 2100 pages of content and you canāt throw us a bone? :(Ā
3. The spell/ritual that Lia tried to perform in Crave (yes I realize that was 1400 pages ago) still has not been explained. What exactly was she doing and why was it going to work? How did she find Grace at all let alone kill her parents? What about Grace is it that was the ONLY thing that would make it work, the gargoyle thing, the mate thing, something else? It does stand to reason that this could still be explained, but I the fact that everyone just accepted (seemingly) that Lia could and would bring Hudson back and never asked āhowā is baffling to me. You can just bring people back from the dead? They should be more concerned about this.Ā
3. The writing is justā¦ not great. Has this stopped me from reading? Absolutely not. But it needs to be addressed. Just because a book is deemed YA doesnāt mean you have to write it like one. This HAS gotten marginally better with each book but itās still very elementary.Ā
4. This will be an unpopular opinion (probably) - I find myself questioning both the spice level and the violence/gore detail and the appropriateness for a young audience. As an adult, I read this and want more spice. The scenes are so unsatisfying in the way they are written, but they are written that way because itās not adult fiction. The violence is vivid and grotesque, you feel those visuals deeply. So I find myself wondering if, even as itās currently written, if itās a little too much for a tween reader? Maybe not. But thereās a difference between 12 and 17, and my mom certainly wouldnāt have let 13 year old me read this.

BUT...
This book left me in the dust. I think maybe it just needed to be two separate books? Like pre-prison and getting out of prison? Because so much happened before Hudson and Grace were locked up, but even more happened while they were in there and I got super lost. Like really super lost. I had absolutely no clue what was going on and had the toughest time following as they tried to get out.
Also, what was with the number of betrayals in this one? I literally never learned who I could trust. Even by the end there were people I was still confused about.
And the end... I genuinely shed tears towards the end. Losing characters is never fun but this one stung more than I anticipated. Maybe because I didn't see it coming like I had for the character death in Crave. However, the resurrections for other characters drove me a little batty. Like yes, we get it, they can't die yet, but also... it could've been good if they had?
This is such a rambly review and I feel like that happens after a few books in a series. I get less structured with my thoughts because it's all just how the book makes me feel.
This one made me feel confused and I wanted more from it. Hoping CourtĀ brings the good stuff.

First of all, this book is too long. It felt like it went on forever. I have no idea if it was because I made a mistake reading this one right after the second or if it was the book itself, but it felt endless.
I still enjoyed the book as I was reading it, but there were a couple days where I just couldn't do it. Those days were right around the time that Grace was being a total dumbass and I just couldn't take her dumbassery. I had to take a couple days break from her stupidity to continue. Oh to be 18 and dumb again.
It might sound like I didn't like it, but I did. I am very attached to these characters. I don't know how it happened with this book series that I picked up just for fun looking for a quick read, but I love them and care about what happens to them. So when some of them start acting stupid, I don't hate the book or the character. It's like reading about a friend or family member making dumb choices and screaming at them because you care just that much. I want just want them to be happy!
Side Note: I think panic attacks were well-depicted in this as someone who has had them herself. I'm not saying it is representative of everyone since people are different, but I thought it was well-written and I liked seeing her use her coping mechanisms to get through them.
My main complaint is the "steamy" scenes. This author writes adult smut and I could see the struggle she was having remembering this is YA. Her make out scenes were top notch. They were full of tension and chemistry. However, they went from graphic making out to incredibly vague sexual content (I think there was some oral, but it was so hard to tell). It was jarring and I had to go back and reread because I just didn't understand what had happened. Maybe I'm too used to it being spelled out for me. I think a fade-to-black or "behind closed doors" might be better in this situation. I legit forgot I was reading YA until we got to those parts. This feels more older YA or even New Adult. Teens have sex, but if you don't want your younger teen reading these heavy sexual tension moments, then maybe this series should be a pass. Having said that, teenage me would have loved this shit. š
So I enjoyed it. I loved buddy reading it with my friend Melissa. It added an extra layer of fun having someone to rant and swoon with. I look forward to the next book in the series and will be ready for it when it comes out in November.
