A modern Catcher in the Rye but with depression instead of anger. Plotless, frustrating

We follow our FMC, Millie, in her day-to-day at a temp job. She seems incredibly depressed, judgmental, and out-of-touch. She desperately needed a good therapist, and probably some form of medication too. This felt like My Year of Rest & Relaxation (similar vibes) but without the dashes of hope sprinkled in. To me, it felt like the author was trying to showcase that there are so many things we as humans care about that are just utterly unimportant. Or maybe it was just highlighting the mundane - this cycle of waking up everyday, doing the same thing, going to this dead-end job. I’m not sure what the intention here was, but it left me feeling unsettled.

Overall, this was a super quick read, I was intrigued and invested enough to see where it went.

This was fine! I’m all for a listless, kind of gross woman trying to navigate life but this just lacked purpose and meaning for me? Which is saying a lot cause I don’t necessarily need strong plots or “purpose” for books, but I finished it kind of like “okay, why?” It was fairly funny and Millie was pretty relatable, but many other books I’ve read do this better.

The most unlikable narrator I’ve ever come across. Millie has immense privilege yet no self awareness nor assertion. She probably has severe depression or BPD, so to some, this may be an accurate depiction of their experiences. To me, the narrative structure was lackluster: the writing confusing and so surface-level. Maybe that was the point of the character study. To show how all of our interactions are surface level and regurgitate what we want to know and hear ourselves. The relationships exhibited in this book were mildly accurate representations of complex female friendships. Despite its merits, I found this book HIGHLY  unenjoyable and almost DNFd — which I’ve never done before — and would not recommend it.
