3/3.5 stars. i can’t really decide. i thought the storytelling was really unique and i was intrigued enough to keep reading. however, i’m a big character person. i like to feel attached to characters, and you that’s hard to feel with this book imo. i don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with this book. i even quite enjoyed the writing. i just think this book is for a particular kind of reader, and others just wont like it. if it sounds like something you’d like, you’ll probably enjoy it well enough. all in all, 3/3.5 stars isn’t a bad rating. it means i enjoyed the book, just didn’t love it.

This book is marketed as a mystery, but that feels the same as having There’s Someone Inside Your House marketed as a slasher story. The story was hard for me to get into, but I’ll admit, once I actually sat down to power through it, it did suck me in a bit more. It wasn’t the most thrilling mystery that I would have liked it to be, and I’ve seen others call it basically a retelling of The Talented Mr. Ripley, but having not read it, I can’t comment on that. I’m still not sure how I feel about the book, wasn’t even sure how I felt while reading it but I can say it’s no We Were Liars and that’s a bit disappointing.

This book was confusing and nowhere near as good as We Were Liars, the only other E Lockhart book I've read. In the end I have no idea why this story took place.

I’m very confused about what this book is supposed to be. I mean, mystery, yea. Thriller, eh. An unpredictable enjoyable ride? Allow me to laugh.

Ok I’ll compare this to the only other book I’ve read of the author’s- We were Liars. Now I didn’t love that book back when I first read it, but goodness reading this one makes me realised just how much better that book was.

This book is not a mystery, because you can already bet on your guesses about 1/3rd through the story, it’s not a thriller because um, everything was too low-key for that sort of thing and this was not enjoyable because this book doesn’t seem to have much of a plot. The plot it does have though, well it doesn’t even give you complete answers or anything so there’s no satisfaction. Loopholes galore and confusion all around- yep that’s what you get in this book.

The only good part about this book was the reverse chronology, probably, since it’s a cool idea. But that wasn’t much of a redeeming quality either cause I didn’t think it worked out too well. I wasn’t sure what 75% of the story was there for considering only around 25% of this book actually contributed to the plot, which is ridiculous cause there aren’t even proper answers for wrapping up the story in this book.

I don’t know what else to say. This was such a disappointment.

The book was written well, but I was confused from start to finish. It made absolutely no sense. Was a quick read.

Hoopis teistsugune põnevik, kui ma varem lugenud olen.
Raamat on üles ehitatud vastupidises suunas.
