I love this book. It's suspenseful without being scary, and it really examines the complexity of relationships. I also very much enjoyed the narration.

I have mixed feelings on how this portrays domestic abuse, rape, and their perpetrators. it’s annoying and disappointing, given that it’s integral to the story, that there is no acknowledgment by the text that what occurred was rape. rape was only seen as a possibility along with general sexual assault.

for a mainstream book with humorous tones, it does well overall, and I’m grateful. love the solidarity between women, especially Madeline and Jane’s friendship. I got emotional at many points.

« Je veux dire, un homme gros et moche peut quand même être drôle, sympa et brillant. Mais on dirait que, pour une femme, être grosse et moche, c’est le summum. Il n’y a pas plus honteux. (…) Nous vivons dans une société obsédée par la beauté, un monde qui considère que le plus important pour une femme, c’est de faire en sorte d’être séduisante pour les hommes. »

I honestly really love this book. I can’t put my finger on what keeps it from 5 stars other than maybe the fact that it’s a familiar story due to its impeccably faithful series adaptation. Even so, if I were to read the book prior to experiencing the show, I’m not sure it would have been a 5-star read for me. The writing is clear and succinct in a way despite the novel being so long. Empathy for the characters is built within such short, pointed passages and it all feels very true to life - moving quickly but still leaving impact on the lives lived. Madeline is delightful and a friend I think anyone would wish for and the ensemble cast beyond her are lovable in their own ways. I also felt a great deal more impact from the peak of the climax than I imagined I would having already known the outcome. These characters are a satirization but they still feel reminiscent of the types of people you know so that moment - seeing that change in demeanor - just had so much more grip than I imagined it would.

It appears I have nothing to complain about so it’s unfortunate to say that despite this being such a fun read and I enjoyed my time, it doesn’t feel like a story I’ll return to.
