A well-written book about the birth of and eventual end of one of the Galapagos islands, taking place over millions of years. Not only an easy to read nonfiction book, but a great supplement to teaching animal adaptations.

In a magical way, Jason Chin writes a biography of an island. Mostly small illustrations with large font writing in between introduce the creation of a Galapagos island, and the arrival and development of animals and plants. It's hard to believe how many animals are introduced, alongside the theory of 'survival of the fittest'. At the end of the book are explanations of Darwin and his theory, as well as tectonics and the volcanic creation of islands; also an author's note. The end papers at the front feature animals and their name, and the end is an excellent map.
The information is fascinating and the illustrations are beautiful.

A great idea for a nonfiction picture book. And the 3rd book I've read of this author. Unfortunately other than the cover, I didn't like the art in this one nearly as much. And the text was a bit stilted too. And the choices made in telling this story was not compelling. And the marine iguanas just appeared swimming. The afterword could also have stronger. Not bad. But I was expecting better.

Jason Chin has created a beautiful celebration of a place that has enchanted me since I was a child. In words that children of all ages will be able to understand and enjoy, he explains the Galapagos, evolution, and more. Well worth the read. Even the end papers are beautifully rendered to enhance the overall experience when reading.
