Wow. Antigone was the first text I studied in high school literature and I was delighted to be reconnected to it so many years later. Kamila Shamsie’s writing style is so elegant, the characters vivid and dense, the reimagined story still as heartbreaking, and it deals with political discussions on religion and politics with the weight it deserves. Would own/pick up again as I couldn’t put this book down.

Week 3 Book 6
Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie
Rating 3/5

This is one of the books that came highly recommended, being well awarded and widely read.

When I started reading it, it took me a while to get into the groove. But when I find ally did, I flowed with the elegant and evocative prose of the author. Fell in love with the language, the descriptions.

In the author's own words, Home Fire is a modern, contemporary adaptation of Saphocles's play Antigone. It deals with the clash between religion and identity and society in the modern world. It revolves around Muslim characters from various points of views, and their internal struggle with themselves, their family, their faith, and their country. A very relatable and relevant story in today's times.

This was my first book by Shamsie and I liked the plot, the writing style, and the ending as well. I would recommend it to everyone interested to read about this theme.

This is an excellent novel. I tend not to enjoy books with political themes because they tend to be populated with flat characters who only exist to deliver a message. This book is not like that. The characters are true, fallible people who are living the fallout of the decisions of others. They're siblings and parents and lovers, and their story is devastating because they feel so real. I am glad I finally read this one.
